The Only Place You Need To Look To Find Your Path
For the last year and a half I have spent my time fully nomadic, exploring the world while working online, writing in cozy cafe corners, meeting the most incredible people along the way. This life that I get to wake up to today is one that I dreamt of for years and actively worked my cute little butt towards for years, too, before this became my tangible reality.
These days I often catch myself thinking back on the younger version of me who had nothing but the vision that was calling her forward, and her commitment to it. I look back on her with so much fucking gratitude and deep love. She was scared, but she did it anyway. I don’t believe she could understand just how bold she was being while she was so intentionally creating her life. Some days I just want to hug her, and tell her thank you.
I have to give credit to Ben Nemtin for his work & message, which I think helped plant this perspective in my heart & mind. He’s poured so much of his life force into reminding others of their own life force; that we are the masters of our own ship. Ben & his encouragement of everyone to sit down and write a bucket-list to pursue comes from the (absolutely heart shattering) fact that 76% of the population reach their deathbed regretting the things they did not do.
Lately, I’ve been feeling the winds of change around me again. As best as I can in the uncomfortable tension that is being in between seasons, I’ve been reminding myself often to listen to the voice, wisdom, and guidance of a future version of me. What would she be so proud of me for doing? What would she regret if I chose to not pursue, create, or experience it? Where will she be most grateful, excited, and fulfilled to see me go next?
The world around us can be very noisy. The people around us can be very opinionated, and discouraging. Our subconscious minds definitely have some old programming that gets in our way sometimes, without us even knowing. However, so much of when we find ourselves feeling “blocked”, “stuck”, or “unclear on our direction”, what is most likely happening is that we are disconnected from ourselves and looking outside for answers that we are meant to find within.
Where you might be struggling to clearly see your current situation, or the path forward, that future version of you might be able to clear up what is happening for you. If your future self was sitting in front of you right now, what would they say to you? Future you can help you to see and understand where you are disempowering yourself, what the root you’ve been trying to discern needs healing is.
If you’re struggling with your own direction, you 5 years from now can offer you some clarity. Imagine where they are, what they are spending their days doing, who they might be surrounded by. Imagine them living life as their favorite self, and the path they took to get there.
If you’re struggling to find or sustain your motivation, commitment, or belief in something that you want to create for your life, you 5 years from now can help keep that fire going. Imagine yourself 5 years from today and living the dreams that you are currently praying for and pouring your creative energy into building.
Imagine this future version of you and how they feel about who you are today. How do they see you? What do you imagine they would want to say to you today?
An excerpt from my journal on my own process around this a few weeks ago, that inspired this piece:
(Please surrender your care for grammar here. Julia Cameron says we don’t need to edit ourselves when journaling 😅)
“Future me would just want me to relax a bit I think. It feels like she sees all of my strength and how good I am at creating + attracting blessings, but she also sees me flailing around as if I’m not safe, and she just wants to hold my hands down softly so that I could get a little bit more still & relax my mind and realize how much I’m actually resisting the beautiful things I so intentionally call into my life. Which is so far from what I actually feel and believe. I don’t feel the need to work harder to attract anything. I need to cultivate all the safety for system to relax + open up to receive.
…
I hope I can keep making future me proud. All she wants me to do is really enjoy my life + who I get to be.”
Now it’s your turn, share in the comments what this concept stirs up within you and how you are planning to keep making future you proud.
Get out there and make some Good Light.
